About Washington Theaters and Entertainment

(Washington, District of Columbia - DC, USA)

The political capital of America is also arguably the country's arts capital as well, with a wide variety of theater, music and other cultural performances held year-round. The John F. Kennedy Memorial Center for the Performing Arts is the largest and most prestigious performance venue in Washington. This massive center, located in the Foggy Bottom district, houses six theaters and has a year-round program of theater, ballet, opera, music and movies. In addition to staging large numbers of sporting events, the Verizon Center (formerly named the MCI Center) is one of the main concert venues in the capital, hosting some of the world's most famous entertainers.

America's National Theater is just down the street from the White House and stages lavish, large scale productions including the best shows of Broadway. The League of Washington Theaters is a non-profit organisation dedicated to the promotion of the performing arts and it sponsors a huge number of theater companies around the city including the Actor's Theater of Washington, Catalyst Theater Company, Fountainhead Theater, Imagination Stage and Rorshach Theater.

There is more to Washington than its stately buildings and dignified history; the city has some vibrant districts and great places where you can hear live music. The Dupont Circle and Adams Morgan districts are home to most of the city's clubs and live music venues. Metro Café provides an eclectic mix of entertainment, from live music to performance art and comedy. Madam's Organ is a long running local institution featuring live blues every night of the week. The Irish Times in Dupont Circle is a great place to hear bar bands. Other popular venues include the 9:30 Club and Galaxy Hut.
